[Shake-dev] Question about timezone (GMT+8) in event.xml file

Hi,

The current interface is buggy and inflexible. I'm going to release a ShakeMap update within the next couple of weeks that has much better handling of timezones, as well as more control over date and time outputs. It will support input and output timezones in the Olson database format (e.g,, "Europe/Helsinki"), and allow operators to customize time and date outputs using strftime()-style formats.

In the meantime, I *strongly* recommend that you use GMT for the time zone for all of your earthquakes in event.xml. The output will be in your computer's understanding of local time (unless you set use_utc in web.conf). In fact, even after you have the next ShakeMap update, I strongly recommend that your input time zone be GMT -- every catalog of which I am aware reports earthquake origins in GMT, and not following the convention only makes your data harder to use.
