Hi,
ShakeMap produces maps using the component normally referred to as “largest of two horizontal.” That is, the software looks at the horizontal components and selects the greater amplitude for each ground motion type. Most GMPEs do not produce this component — most of the GMPEs in ShakeMap produce geometric mean, random component, average component, or other. In these cases, we convert the GMPE’s ground motions to largest of two horizontal using the conversion equations of Beyer and Bommer. (I’ve attached the reference. Note that they call the largest of two horizontal component “Env”, or “Envelope of x and y spectra."). If you wish to use geometric mean, you could use the conversion factors from Beyer and Bommer to convert the grids.
