Abstract: One of the enduring mysteries in earthquake science has involved the earthquake that heavily damaged Charleston, South Carolina, in 1886. Although it was large enough to cause chandeliers to swing in Detroit and Cuba, and documented by extensive contemporary observations, the causative fault(s) and seismotectonic framework for the Charleston Seismic Zone have remained poorly understood, with evidence of faulting obscured by saturated Atlantic Coastal Plain sediments. A detailed consideration of archival accounts, regional stratigraphy and geomorphology, and inferred relic railroad offsets provide constraints with which an elastic deformation model can be developed, involving primary moment release on the Gants-Summerville fault. Modeling supports a moment magnitude on the upper end of the range estimated previously from macroseismic data alone: Mw7.3. Ground motion predictions using an average of recently developed NGA-East ground motion models (GMMs) are highly consistent with the directly estimated near-field intensity distribution. The suite of 17 NGA-East GMMs have high variability at magnitudes upwards of 6 due to a paucity of instrumental data. Arguably, the independent constraint on Mw for the Charleston earthquake provides an opportunity to evaluate proposed models.
Bio: Susan Hough joined the Pasadena USGS office in 1992, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, having received her PhD from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1988 and spent four years at Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory. Her research interests include earthquake ground motions, induced and triggered earthquakes, and historical earthquakes.
