Abstract: Advances in computational power and the availability of high-quality seismic data from dense seismic networks and emerging instruments offer excellent opportunities to refine our understanding of multi-scale Earth's structure and dynamics from the surface to the core. We are at a stage where we need to take the full complexity of wave propagation into account and avoid commonly used approximations to the wave equation and corrections in seismic tomography. The first-generation global adjoint models are isotropic or transversely isotropic constructed using travel times only to tackle the elastic structure perturbed around 1D Q models. In the next-generation models we try to address better physics in inversions through appropriate model parameterizations, such as including azimuthal anisotropy and attenuation, while exploring how to constrain the outer-core structure with full-waveform modeling. We also employ similar techniques to continental-scale problems to achieve higher-resolution lithospheric and upper mantle models where the Middle East is our current target region. While we need to tackle computational and "big data" challenges to better harness the available resources on Earth, we have "small data" challenges on other planetary bodies such as Mars, where we now have the first radially symmetric models constrained by seismic waves generated by marsquakes as part of the Mars InSight mission. I will talk about advances in the theory, computations, and data in exploring multi-scale Earth's and Mars' interiors. I will also talk about our recent efforts to address computational and data challenges and discuss future directions in the context of global seismology.

Bio: Dr. Bozdag is an Associate Professor at Colorado School of Mines. She obtained her PhD in seismology from Utrecht University, and MSc/BSc degrees in geophysics from Istanbul Technical University. She moved to Colorado in 2017 as an Assistant Professor from Nice, France, where she was a tenured Assistant/Associate Professor and held a Chaire d’Excellence position at Université Côte d’Azur CNRS-Géoazur. Before moving to Nice for a faculty position, she was an Associate Research Scholar at Princeton University where she also did her postdoctoral studies.

Dr. Bozdag is a global and computational seismologist. She uses 3D numerical wave simulations to explore and model Earth’s and planetary interiors from the crust to the core. Her primary focus has been passive-source full-waveform inversion with a special emphasis on global adjoint tomography based on 3D seismic wave simulations. She was a recipient of the NSF CAREER award in 2020, has been a Co-I of the Mars InSight mission since 2018, and has served on the editorial board of Geophysical Journal International since 2020.
