Distributed Acoustic Sensing for Infrastructure and Geohazards

Abstract: Fiber optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) allows us to convert a standard fiber optic cable into a dense array of strain sensors over long distances. We have developed new scalable techniques for using existing dark fiber infrastructure readily available in many earthquake-prone regions, installing fiber in less-invasive ways along infrastructure supported by permafrost, and installing fiber throughout underground mine environments where seismicity monitoring could improve worker safety outcomes.
While fiber optic sensing has enabled easier seismic data acquisition, this has also led to much larger data volumes than these applications have ever previously used. For DAS to be adopted for these applications at any meaningful scale, we require: (i) fast turnaround times from data acquisition to discovery/decisions, (ii) analysis methods that only require a small amount of computational hardware, and (iii) reliable reproducible workflows.
Thus, we have pursued a holistic approach to DAS data acquisition, analysis software, and data sharing. We have released software for real-time initial DAS data analysis in the field, we are growing the DAS Data Analysis Ecosystem of open-source Python software tools, we have created new algorithms that greatly reduce hardware and time requirements, and we recently released the PubDAS public DAS data archive.
Bio: Eileen Martin is an assistant professor at Colorado School of Mines jointly appointed in geophysics and applied math and statistics, and is affiliated with the hydrologic science and engineering program. She holds a PhD in computational and mathematical engineering, an MS in geophysics, and BS degrees in mathematics and computational physics.
