"Validation of Deterministic Broadband (0-5 Hz) Ground Motion and Variability from 3-D Dynamic Rupture Simulations along Non-planar Faults"

3D wave propagation simulations provide information about earthquake ground motions for regions with sparse or non-existent ground motion sampling, and therefore have many applications, such as earthquake preparedness and response planning, and physics-based seismic hazard assessment. Here, we model the dynamic rupture propagation of scenario earthquakes along both strike-slip and dipping fault plane geometries employing fault roughness. We study broadband ground motion from these deterministic simulations in varying complexity media in the subsequent wave propagation. We find that we can generate realistic broadband ground motion (up to 5-7.5 Hz), as compared with empirical relations, (as characterized by the median and standard deviation) such as ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs). We observe several informative trends that may help guide the future development of GMPEs; for example, ground motion variability is strongly affected by the addition of small-scale media heterogeneity, reducing otherwise large values of intra-event standard deviation closer to those of empirical observations. Finally, we also compare our synthetic ground motion with several proxy metrics (for example, the period-to-period correlation of spectral acceleration) as well as strong ground motion records of the 1994 Mw 6.7 Northridge earthquake, and determine the relative significance of media complexity with variation in period. Existing and future results from 3D simulations may become increasingly important to USGS Earthquake Hazards products, including the National Seismic Hazard Model and ShakeMap, and we highlight various potential applications from this work.
