FYI-
Karen Klima, USGS Enterprise Web Program Manager in the GIO office, sent this to me. Pretty impressive!

Recently a prominent Federal Web 2.0 blog (O’Reilly Radar) identified the
top 10 most downloaded datasets on Data.gov. This article was subsequently
the headline for the recent Federal Data.gov News Brief (attached) which is
widely disseminated across the Federal Government to Open Government,
Data.gov, and Web 2.0 professionals. Taking the top spot for all Federal
Datasets on Data.gov was a USGS dataset (Worldwide M1 + Earthquakes, Past 7
Days).
Congratulations to all involved in making this happen. This is a great news
story for USGS and demonstrates to the entire Federal Government the value
of our scientific research. Additionally, The O’Reilly blog reached out to
potential application developers to identify new apps that may have been
recently developed as a result of this dataset. The ability to reach new
markets and non-traditional communities that may be tapping into and
leveraging our science is one of the benefits of this effort. We hope that
this new market channel is able to further foster innovative new research
relationships further improving the quality of our science.
This is a great news story for Earthquakes, USGS, and Open Government.
Kevin Gallagher's email below recently established the current USGS interim
data.gov process. Let's continue to identify data candidates for Data.gov.
Great job to all!

Subject: USGS Data.gov Interim Publishing Process and Guidelines
Under President Obama’s Open Government Initiative, Data.gov was
established so that Federal data could be accessed rapidly in forms that
the public can readily find and use. Data.gov delivers data published by
the Executive Branch of the Federal Government and hopes to enable
innovation, new discoveries, and the “knowledge economy”. Data.gov access
to USGS data provides opportunities to communities -- not traditionally
associated with or aware of USGS products and services -- to conduct
valuable research and analyses, combine data into new and interesting ways,
and build novel applications, services, or derivative information products.
The attached USGS Interim Data.Gov Publishing Process and Guidelines
outline the approach by which USGS will select and publish data in
Data.gov. Some of the highlights of the guidelines include:
· Criteria to ensure compliance with Federal laws and the OMB’s Open
Government Directive;
· Guidance for identifying “high value” datasets for submission;
· Procedures for submitting and approving dataset metadata for
inclusion in Data.gov; and
· Best practices for maintenance of dataset and metadata once
submitted and accepted.
The Interim USGS Publishing Process and Guidelines will ensure that USGS
datasets published in Data.gov are consistent with the Secretary’s
priorities, the USGS Science Strategy, and our Fundamental Science
Practices. Additionally, an initial network of USGS Data Access
Coordinators has been established to assist offices and data owners with
submitting datasets to Data.gov. These Coordinators will serve on the USGS
Data.gov Advisory Group, along with the USGS Data.Gov points of contacts
and representative(s) from the Council on Data Integration.
We encourage programs to review the guidelines and make every effort to
identify and submit datasets to Data.gov. You can find the guidelines and
related information on the USGS Intranet Website at
http://internal.usgs.gov/gio/datagov. For more information or assistance
in publishing your dataset, you can start by contacting the USGS service
desk at servicedesk at usgs.gov
