The 2018 Earthquake Insight Field Trip through the New Madrid region will be
held on Wednesday afternoon, April 25, through Friday afternoon, April 27.
This year the Missouri Seismic Safety Commission will co-host the event.
This is a unique and valuable experience for those in industries at risk
from earthquakes (transportation, planning, communications, logistics,
utilities, government, equity and investment, insurance, and many others),
professional geoscientists, first-responders, interested lay people, and
students.
The field trip begins in the St. Louis area and includes Kaskaskia, Ill.;
Ste. Genevieve and New Madrid, Mo.; Reelfoot Lake, Tenn.; as well as other
sites in southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, and western Tennessee and
Kentucky.
The route includes geological evidence of the geologic and earthquake
history of the region, as well as sites important to the human stories of
the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquakes. The field-trip route is about 500 miles
long, and will include two overnight stops.
Those who are interested in details about the 2018 Earthquake Insight Field
Trip should contact Jeff Briggs at <mailto:jeff.briggs at sema.dps.mo.gov>

returned to you.
Please feel free to pass this information on to others who may be
interested.
In the past, the annual Earthquake Insight Field Trips were subsidized by
the US Geological Survey. However in 2018, as in the past several years,
professional geoscientists will volunteer their time and expertise to lead
the event.
Continuing Education units (CEUs) may be available through the University of
Missouri.
Please feel free to pass this invitation on to others.
Cheers,

"Minimizing earthquake risk is a funny business. The payoff may not come for
a long time -- and then it will be in terms of what did not happen."
