Greetings.

The US Geological Survey and other geoscience professionals are hosting Earthquake Insight Briefing, an educational event, in Washington DC on Wednesday, February 19, 2014.

This Earthquake Insight Briefing will include an overview of earthquake hazards in the central and eastern US that expose many investment, commerce, and business operations to earthquake risk. This program is not for scientists and engineers, but for those in investment, insurance, business operations, loss mitigation, and related business and financial practice areas.

I’ve pasted a short newsletter-type article below, which explains the event. Would it be possible for you to share this announcement with peers and colleagues who may want to attend?

Registration information for the Earthquake Insight Briefing is included in the article below, and is via http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/ceus/workshop_eqinsight2014.php

Many thanks – and happy holidays!

Cheers,

Earthquake Insight LLC

"Minimizing earthquake risk is a funny business. The payoff may not come for a long time -- and then it will be in terms of what did not happen."

Earthquake Insight Briefing Planned for Industry and Government Leaders

            An Earthquake Insight Briefing will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 in Washington DC. The half-day program addresses the business impacts of earthquake hazards and risks from a business, operations, market, equity, and portfolio perspective.

            It is for those in equity and investment, insurance, lending and finance, portfolio management, risk analysis, commodity transport, utility systems, communications, business operations, continuity planning, national security, and related areas. The program is for non-geoscientists and non-engineers in both the public and private sectors, especially in the eastern US.

            Confirmed speakers for Earthquake Insight Briefing include:

·       Wayne Clough, Secretary, Smithsonian Institution;

·       Steve Jaume; College of Charleston (S.C.);

·       Martin Chapman; Virginia Tech;

·       Deborah Pettit; Superintendent, Louisa County Public Schools;

·       Morgan Eddy; Steele Foundations; Washington DC;

·       Ann Brower; Economist, Lincoln University; Christchurch, NZ (planned, via video conference);

· Tom Pratt; US Geological Survey; Reston, Va.; and

· Wright Horton; US Geological Survey; Reston, Va.

            Earthquake Insight Briefing will be held at the District Architecture Center, 421 Seventh Street NW, Washington DC. Registration information may be found at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/ceus/workshop_eqinsight2014.php. Before January 15, 2014, the cost of the event is $125. After January 15, 2014, registration increases to $145. Registration includes continental breakfast and lunch.

            Earthquake Insight Briefing is modeled after a similar program that has been held annually in St. Louis, Mo., since 1994. That program has been a cornerstone outreach effort from the geoscience and engineering community, including the US Geological Survey, to decision-makers in business and government. It also has focused on earthquake hazards and risks in the central and eastern US.
