St. Louis Area Earthquake Hazards Mapping Project - May 2007 E-News

Welcome! New Staff for US Geological Survey & Missouri Division of Geology & Land Survey

Oliver Boyd, PhD, recently joined the Memphis office of the US Geological Survey. Oliver earned his BS, MS, and PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Most recently he has served as the Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow at the USGS in Denver, Colo., working on time-dependent probabilistic seismic hazards and producing seismic hazards maps for parts of Alaska, Indonesia, and Afghanistan.

Dave Overhoff recently joined the Missouri Division of Geology & Land Survey in Rolla. Dave will serve as the Survey's geohazards geologist as well as manage the Survey's role on this project. He has 10 years work experience in both public and private environmental geology and environmental engineering. Dave is a graduate of Missouri State University and also did graduate work at New Mexico State University.

Sponsors Needed: There's Work to Do!

Pick the work that appeals to you most - and grab your checkbook! Here's what we need now for this project. More scopes of work will be developed in the next few months.

Historic Map Collection: This will support a grad student and an undergrad in researching the files of the Missouri Historical Society, St. Louis Mercantile Library, and other local public and private libraries. They will search for old maps and other catalogued information that will help build the database for this project. A professor will oversee and direct the work. $4900 is needed. It is planned that the support would be made payable to the University of Missouri - Rolla and, as such, should be tax-deductible.

Data Quality Assessment: This will support a review and assessment of various boring logs, geophysical logs, maps, and other identified data resources for this project. The purpose is to identify field data that is most appropriate to include in the project database. A professor will lead this work. $4800 is needed. It is planned that the support would be made payable to the University of Missouri - Rolla and, as such, should be tax-deductible.

Current Maps & Imagery: This will support a grad student and an undergrad in researching current information to help build the database for this project. This will include LiDAR images, digital ortho quarter quads (DOQQs), digital elevation models (DEM), specialty maps (karst, undermined areas, etc.) and other sources. A professor will oversee and direct the work. $4900 is needed. It is planned that the support would be made payable to the University of Missouri - Rolla and, as such, should be tax-deductible.

Geotechnical Data Collection: This effort will support a grad student and an undergrad in identifying relevant geotechnical data that has already been collected. Sources may include various past projects by MSD, US Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis Airport Authority, MoDOT, IDOT, etc. A professor will oversee and direct the work. $4900 is needed. It is planned that the support would be made payable to the University of Missouri - Rolla and, as such, should be tax-deductible.

Fall Field Trip: This effort will support development of a one-day field trip in the St. Louis metro area for non-scientists. The event includes visits to various sites that are significant in explaining the earthquake issue in the central US. More than a dozen professional and research geoscientists, engineers, and emergency managers will travel with the group on a chartered motor coach, a box lunch, and a guidebook. A great opportunity for business development - invite your clients!

Contact Phyllis Steckel (psteckel at charter.net) to arrange for your support of these efforts.

Earthquake Insight Field Trip

The second Earthquake Insight Field Trip will be held on Thursday and Friday, May 31 and June 1, 2007. The trip will start and end in Memphis, Tenn., and will include visits to sites and sights in northeast Arkansas, southeast Missouri, southernmost Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee.

As of May 9, four seats are still available.

The trip is designed for non-scientists, such as business leaders, elected officials, and media - especially those in finance, insurance, equity, portfolio management, utilities, infrastructure, business operations, logistics and distribution, planning and related fields. More than a dozen expert geoscientists, engineers, and planners active in the central US earthquake issue will travel with the group, offering formal presentations as well as one-on-one discussions.
