Hi Nathan,
There seems to be a commonality between many networks these days to
use some sort of cylindrical vault like the overpack waste storage
barrels (like Mark described) or the fiberglass that Bob
mentioned. Memphis uses some rather large culverts I think. The TA
uses slightly smaller culverts. The size and depth depend largely on
the conditions at the site. If you can hit bedrock in the first few
feet, you don't need a very large vault. However, the sensors need
sufficient insulation and need to be separated from surface noise
like wind so they can't be too small. We at the NCSN use the waste
barrels similar to Mark and try to find a location where a 3ft tall
one will fit. The guys at Berkeley buy a 8ft x 20ft (?) shipping
container and dig out the side of a hill and plant it in there then
cover it up.
The crew at ASL have installed and tested several different flavors
of vault. I wouldn't be surprised if Kyle and Bob Hutt have written
Open File Reports on the performance of each. From what I can see,
the real-world differences in vault design are not very significant
unless you compare temporary surface installations to barrel-type to
tunnel/adit installations. Of course a lot depends on the
performance of the broadband sensor you plan to install. If you have
a STS-1-class instrument you'll want an overbuilt quiet site.
