Hi Erik:
lonspan is magnitude specific, as you noted in your first email.
For example in shake.conf,
###########################################################################
# Magnitude at which the longitude span is increased to account for the
# larger area of significant ground motion
###########################################################################
variable_flags : grind 0.0 4.0 -lonspan 10.0
variable_flags : grind 4.0 5.0 -lonspan 10.0
variable_flags : grind 5.0 6.0 -lonspan 10.0
variable_flags : grind 6.0 9.9 -lonspan 10.0
This produces the same lonspan no matter what magnitude. It can also be
made magnitude dependent.
