Hi Lily,****
I have also been searching online forums for ways to expand the virtual
disk space and tried some approaches, but here is a straightforward
procedure that worked for me - which actually does not require
installation of third party tools and partition editors. The procedure is
done in few easy steps. But before you try this, you may want to have a
backup of your system or may be clone your disk (Linux.vdi) first.
****

The Steps:****

***1. ***Launch your VirtualBox. Go to Settingsà Storage , then
create (add new Hard disk – I named it NewDisk1.vdi as indicated in the
screenshot below) a dynamically allocated VDI with a larger disk size of
your choice. Note that Linux.vdi is SATA port 0 (default) and NewDisk1.vdi
is assigned SATA port 1.****

And the created new disk with large virtual size.****

***2. ***Start the VM. Assuming the name of your volume group is
the same as mine “VolGroup”, issue the following FIVE commands (highlighted in
color) as *root*. You can verify your volume group by running "fdisk -l" as
root. ****

*[root at localhost shake]# fdisk -l*****

*[root at localhost shake]# pvcreate /dev/sdb
*Writing physical volume data to disk "/dev/sdb"
Physical volume "/dev/sdb" successfully created****

*[root at localhost shake]# vgextend /dev/mapper/VolGroup /dev/sdb*
Volume group "VolGroup" successfully extended****

*[root at localhost shake]# lvextend -l +100%FREE /dev/VolGroup/lv_root
*Extending logical volume lv_root to 127.00 GiB
Logical volume lv_root successfully resized****

*[root at localhost shake]# resize2fs /dev/VolGroup/lv_root*
resize2fs 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
Filesystem at /dev/VolGroup/lv_root is mounted on /; on-line resizing
required
old desc_blocks = 1, new_desc_blocks = 8
Performing an on-line resize of /dev/VolGroup/lv_root to 33292288 (4k)
blocks.
The filesystem on /dev/VolGroup/lv_root is now 33292288 blocks long.****

*3.* At this stage, the disk space is effectively increased to the
desired size without even the need to restart the VM. But you may want to check
the effect by rebooting the VM or by closing and restarting it again. ****

*[root at localhost shake]# df -h**
*Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on****

 rootfs 126G 3.8G *121G* 3% /****

devtmpfs 833M 0 833M 0% /dev****

tmpfs 842M 228K 841M 1% /dev/shm****

/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root 126G 3.8G * 121G* 3% /****

 tmpfs 842M 41M 801M 5% /run****

tmpfs 842M 0 842M 0% /sys/fs/cgroup****

tmpfs 842M 0 842M 0% /media****

/dev/sda2 497M 71M 402M 15% /boot****

 none 452G 78G 374G 18% /media/sf_ShakeVM****

 ****

I hope this helps,****

Dear ShakeMap Users,****

** **

While trying to download a Vs30 grid to ShakeMap, I got the error message
"no space left on device." Does anyone have any suggestions on how to add
and/or make more room on my virtual machine as I don't necessarily want to
delete files in order to accomplish this? Also, I would like to figure
this problem out before I install the new updates to ShakeMap.****

Thank you so much in advance!****

Saludos,****
