Abstract: Over the last decade, seismic hazard assessment projects for critical facilities have adopted a partially non-ergodic approach. This approach is postulated on identifying the portions of ground motion variability that are repeatable (and thus predictable) and transparently identifying these as epistemic uncertainty, which can be reduced with additional information. In parallel, the aleatory variability (i.e., sigma) can be reduced by removing repeatable effects from the sigma. This talk reviews the implementation of the non-ergodic approach in several recent projects, with a focus on the evolution of the quantification of epistemic uncertainty in site response. Finally, a framework for including a partially non-ergodic approach in building codes and the National Seismic Hazard Maps is proposed. Results for a sample PSHA are presented and discussed.

Bio: Dr. Adrian Rodriguez-Marek obtained his B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Washington State University, and his Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley in 2000 working under the guidance of Prof. Jonathan Bray. After getting his Ph.D. in August 2000 Adrian went back to WSU as an Assistant Professor. He stayed at WSU until 2010 when he moved to Virginia Tech where he is now a professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Dr. Rodriguez-Marek’s research is in the general area of geotechnical earthquake engineering. He has led NSF-funded reconnaissance teams to study the geotechnical aspects of three separate earthquakes (2001 Southern Peru; 2003 Colima, Mexico; and 2007 Pisco, Peru earthquakes). He has also made contributions to the engineering characterizations of ground motions in general and near-fault ground motions in particular. His work on site amplification in the Northridge and Loma Prieta earthquakes contributed to understanding potential limitations in code site-classification and amplification factors. He has also been a leading developer of the concept of non-ergodic seismic hazard analysis. This concept leads to a much more rigorous treatment of uncertainty in ground motions in hazard analysis applications. Dr. Rodriguez-Marek has been a member of the ground motion characterization team in several project for the seismic hazard assessment of critical facilities in the U.S. and abroad.
