Strike-Slip Earthquakes in the Geomorphic Record

Abstract: Offset geomorphic landforms along strike-slip faults record evidence of past earthquakes. However, interpreting the geomorphic record to infer earthquake history is complicated by the variable nature of surface ruptures and climate-modulated landscape change. In this talk we will explore the limitations and opportunities of the geomorphic record with slip distributions from 40 recent and historical surface ruptures, geomorphic offset data for 20 strike-slip faults with evidence of multiple paleo earthquakes, synthetic slip distributions with 0-50% noise, and landscape evolution models. With these datasets, we investigate the competing influences of tectonics and climate on strike-slip fault expression, implications for interpreting earthquake history, and new approaches for obtaining slip distributions from geomorphic offset data.

Bio: Nadine Reitman is a Research Geologist at the USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center. She received a BA in Earth Science from Vassar College (2010) and MS in Hydrogeology from the University of Colorado Boulder (2013). She was introduced hazards science working in Denali National Park before joining the GHSC for the first time (2014-2016) as a geologist in the Earthquake Geology group. She left to complete a PhD in Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder and was happy to rejoin GHSC permanently in 2020. Her research blends geomorphology, geodesy, and earthquake geology to investigate how earthquake history is stored in landscapes.
