Abstract: The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has a mandate to work toward risk reduction from subduction systems. This mandate complements the goals of many USGS partners (IODP, NSF, SZ4D, etc.) which, in turn, benefits USGS scientists with new perspectives provided by multi-disciplinary and international work, as well as technological advances enabling offshore exploration. Currently, subduction zone science is not a formal program at the USGS, but there is grassroots and management momentum to reprogram and request new subduction-zone-targeted resources.

This presentation summarizes current efforts in subduction zone science across the USGS. We present a few examples of USGS subduction zone research, including work in partnership with numerous collaborators. These include field and modeling studies of onshore and offshore landslides, new seafloor geodetic measurements, high-resolution submarine imaging and bathymetry, paleoseismic studies, and much more. We invite interested researchers to join efforts to create a USGS Subduction Zone Science Community of Practice.

Bios: Dr. Kirstie Haynie is developmental geophysicist at the USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center (GHSC). She completed two BS degrees, one in mathematics and another in geophysics, from the University of Houston in 2014, and obtained her PhD from the University at Buffalo, SUNY in 2019 where she specialized in Geodynamics with a focus on developing 3D numerical simulations of subduction in Alaska. Kirstie joined the USGS GHSC as a Mendenhall postdoc in fall 2019 where she used her passion for computing to learn how to best leverage the cloud for running scientific applications. Given her love to subduction zones, she started her adventures in cloud computing with the USGS Slab2 3D subduction zone models and has since be involved in the migration of various near-real-time-products to the cloud as well as cloud-based development of new hazard products.

Dr. Rich Briggs is a research geologist at the USGS GHSC. He obtained his BS in Geologic and Environmental Science from Stanford University in 1999 and his PhD from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2004 at the Center for Neotectonic Studies. Rich then made his way back to California where he was a postdoc at the Caltech Tectonics Observatory until 2008 when he joined the USGS. Rich has worked on subduction zones globally, including field studies in Sumatra, the Solomon Islands, and Alaska.
