Soil-fluid-structure interaction during earthquakes, tsunamis, and multi-hazards

Abstract: Earthquake-tsunami multi-hazards affect coastal buildings and infrastructure via strong shaking, large hydrodynamic loading, and ground failure (e.g., liquefaction, enhanced scouring). I will talk about my work on this topic for the last ten years, with a particular focus on earthquake and tsunami-induced liquefaction. The work includes analytical formulations, numerical modeling via finite element and finite difference methods, physical modeling using a geotechnical centrifuge, and post-disaster reconnaissance trips to Japan (2011) and Indonesia (2018). I will expound upon how I see the work fitting into existing USGS products. Finally, I will discuss future ideas and collaborations. I have listed the primary references for my talk below.
