Abstract: Two challenges to modeling debris flow behavior are parameter uncertainty and the great variation in kinematic behavior. The effect of parameter uncertainty, which in the case of the D-Claw shallow flow model are material properties, can be reduced by having a low sensitivity to individual parameters and the model performing well across a wide range of plausible input parameters. The kinematics of a debris flow vary from channelized flow to dispersive flow on an unconfined alluvial fan. Further, debris flows can form levees, creating a new channel that confines the flow on an otherwise unconfined slope. In this presentation I present new physics sub-models, one for hysteric friction and one that includes the partial effects of segregation, added to D-Claw, adding to the existing static friction sub-model. I evaluate the performance of different combinations of the sub-models to form levees and to simulate a debris flow experiment performed at the USGS flume near Blue River, OR. Results from a large number of simulations, covering a range of material properties, demonstrate the models capabilities to simulate the wide range of debris flow kinematics.
Bio: Ryan is a Mendenhall Fellow who joined the USGS mid-2020. He is working with the Landslide Hazard Program on modeling the runout and inundation of post-fire debris flows. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University in 2021 focusing on modeling fluid and granular surface flows. His current research focuses on the development, application, and assessment of debris flow models towards the eventual application in debris flow hazard assessments.
