How SciComm Can Amplify Your Science
Speaker: Lisa Wald
USGS, GHSC
Location: online/virtual and
GHSC room 204 (USGS/GHSC employees only for now)
Date/Time: Tuesday, April 12th, 2022, 10–11am MDT
Abstract:
"Science isn't done until it's been communicated." (Sir Mark Walport, U.K. Government Chief Scientific Advisor) Not just to your peers, but to as many people as possible! (Lisa Wald, GHSC SciComm)
SciComm can help with that! There are many ways we can help you extend the reach of your research to more audiences, both internal and external. That's good both for you and for those who might benefit or learn from your work. In this brief seminar you'll learn the many ways we can "market" your research and accomplishments within the USGS and to a broader online audience. The best part is that it requires a small effort on your part, yet these strategies can have a big impact. Our Office of Communications and Publishing (OCAP) POC, Heidi Koontz, will also join us to talk about the new developments in OCAP and how OCAP can amplify your science too.

Bio:
Lisa has been a geophysicist in the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program since 1987, first in the Pasadena, CA USGS Office for 15 years, and now in the Golden, CO office since 2002. After doing research for the first 12 years, she now focusses on Science Communications. She also serves as the Web Content Manager for the national USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, the Landslide Hazards Program, and the Geomagnetism Program websites, the Natural Hazards Mission Area, and the Geologic Hazards Science Center (public and internal).
During the last 10+ years, she has read and answered thousands of emails from website visitors about earthquakes. She has designed and created web articles, USGS Fact Sheets and other print documents for communicating the mission, products, and activities of the Earthquake Hazards Program. National Geographic has used her educational materials, and she has been a consultant for several children’s books, including Time Magazine’s “Time for Kids” and Random House’s “Magic Tree House”.
