A Term of Endearment

Jaime Delano, Geologist, USGS

During the last three years I have been privileged to participate in a wide variety of projects with the Intermountain West (IMW) team and other Geologic Hazard Science Center groups. In this presentation, I summarize the projects I have contributed to as well the original first-author research I conducted over the course of my term position. First and foremost, I provide field and office support for projects such as paleoseismic trenching, seismic surveys, and emergency event response that all contribute to bettering our understanding of earthquake hazard. One aspect is to look for opportunities to improve team productivity and promote important ongoing science. I helped develop a technique to improve trench photomosaic generation using coded target scale bars which greatly reduces the time spent in the field and office and reduces the amount of equipment needed. Additionally, I have coordinated with internal outreach (e.g., Lisa Wald) and external outreach (e.g., AGU social media) to highlight the important contributions the IMW team makes. These field projects often spur additional research questions that I have investigated with IMW team support. In the New Madrid seismic zone, I used extensive lidar to explore the spatial patterns of sackungen that form during Reelfoot fault earthquakes. I also used these lidar datasets to investigate the surface expression of the southern extension of the Reelfoot fault and infer how this affects our understanding of the Reelfoot fault earthquake record. I am grateful to everyone who has contributed to an excellent time at the USGS as I move on to begin a PhD in New Zealand.
