Dear friends and colleagues,

I'd like to draw your attention to Matt Thomas' (USGS)
<https://www.usgs.gov/staff-profiles/matthew-a-thomas?qt-staff_profile_science_products=3#qt-staff_profile_science_products>
upcoming
talk at the Colorado School of Mines titled "The Arctic Coastal Erosion
Problem". Matt has been invited to participate in Mines' weekly Van Tuyl
Lecture Series, and will be sharing a series of jaw-dropping images, data,
and modeling results related to an ongoing collaborative research project
focused along the Arctic coastline of Alaska. This coastline is
characterized by some of the highest coastal bluff erosion rates in the
world, rates that are associated with a combination of wave activity,
permafrost melting, and bluff failure. As a Research Hydrologist in the
USGS Landslide Program, Matt is interested in better understanding the
physical/mechanical processes associated with this form of slope
instability. In my opinion, the images alone are worth a gander.

Matt's abstract and other information can be found here
<https://calendar.mines.edu/event/van-tuyl-lecture-matt-thomas-usgs/>.
Basic information is as follows:

*Date: *Sept 26, 2019
*Time:* 4:00 pm
*Place:* Berthoud Hall (Colorado School of Mines), Room 241
*Bonus:* Free pizza

Please let me know if you'd like any additional information! Hope to see
you there!

Best,
Theresa
