*Landslide Recognition in Poland - Past, Present, and Future*
*Dr. Lukasz Pawlik*
*Faculty of Earth Sciences*
*University of Silesia, Poland *
Due to high level of investments in private properties and a growing number
of inhabitants in the Polish part of the Flysch Carpathians, landslides
recognition and prevention became a hot topic for many practitioners,
officials and scientists. The Polish Geological Survey was obliged by
country and EU regulations to start a national program of landslides field
mapping along with the evaluation of the level of landslide activity. So
far, since 2010, about 60,000 landslides have been mapped. However, for
many decades, before the program has been set up, scientists from different
universities across Poland had studied the problem of landslides from
different perspectives of long-term landscape evolution or global climate
changes in the Quaternary. Everything started from isolated “case studies”
conducted at least from the beginning of the 20th century, of which results
have been gradually filling white spots on the map of unknown and
unrecognized phenomenon of landsliding. The problem is still vital,
especially in the Carpathians where bedrock properties, high level of
precipitation and human impact provide a fatal mix of factors which are far
from our control. This talk will present the most important steps in the
history of landslides recognition in Poland, but also try to look at the
future perspectives for landslides mapping, monitoring and modeling.
