*Earthquake behavior through time: Observations across the Pacific Plate *

*Alex Hatem*
*University of Southern California *

The spatial and temporal occurrence of earthquakes may or may not be
constant through time. Such irregularity can have first-order effects on
fault geometry and evolution, which in turn effect control potential plate
boundary rupture scenarios. In my talk, I will present primary data of
earthquake behavior through time using paleoseismic and incremental slip
rate studies from the Hope fault (New Zealand), as well as a synoptic
characterization of the tectonic role and evolution of the Garlock fault
(southern California). While these studies elucidate earthquake behavior
over hundreds to millions of years, utilizing such high-resolution,
long-term temporal data in the calculation of short-term mean earthquake
hazard remains enigmatic.
