[ghsc-seminars] Today @ 2pm, USGS-GHSC Seminar: Zoheir Khademian, Studying Induced Seismicity with Energy Calculation

Mirus, Benjamin bbmirus at usgs.gov
Tue Mar 27 15:33:20 UTC 2018

*Developing a Numerical Platform for Studying Induced Seismicity based on
Energy Calculation*

*Zoheir Khademian, Colorado School of mines*

Induced seismicity is one of the challenges in practicing Rock Engineering
Activities, including mining, tunneling, deep wastewater disposal, and
geothermal energy extraction. Excavation in the highly stressed ground may
lead to a seismic event characterized by significant radiation of seismic
energy. Injection of fluid into fractured rock in deep wastewater disposal
and geothermal reservoirs can also induce rupture along preexisting
discontinuity with an earthquake-like seismic signature. This dissertation
presents a numerical platform for mechanistically studying the occurrence
and magnitudes of induced seismic events.

*Tuesday, March 27th, 2018*
*2-3 pm **(Mountain Time)*
*Entry Level Seminar Room*
*USGS G**eologic Hazards Science Center*
*1711 Illinois Street, Golden, CO*

*Note: Please arrive *~5 minutes early* and *bring photo ID* for
airport-style security measures now in place at the USGS building.

Thank you,
