*USGS's Structural Health Monitoring Application*
*Erol Kalkan, P.E.*
*Earthquake Science Center, U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, CA*
Major earthquakes can cause significant loss of life and catastrophic
property damage. Most of these losses result from damage to buildings and
other structures. To minimize or prevent future losses, it is imperative to
periodically monitor the structural state-of-health before, during and
after an
earthquake to assess condition or serviceability, and to track progressive
deterioration in order to promote comprehensive and efficient inspection
service.
In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the U.S.
Geological Survey has developed structural health monitoring (SHM)
software. The SHM software monitors earthquake activity in real-time, and
analyzes building response data gathered from sensors permanently installed
in the structure.
Upon triggering, by an earthquake or threshold exceedance of monitored
parameters, the SHM software rapidly creates three types of PDF reports
with specific contents for emergency responders, structural engineers and
expert earthquake engineers, and notifies them via emails and SMS
messages. The parameters monitored by the SHM software are inter-story
drift ratios, modal parameters, shear-wave travel times throughout the
building, and base-shear capacity-demand. The SHM software also offers a
web application. The software was validated using data from the U.C. San
Diego shake table.
The SHM is currently running at twenty-five VA hospitals, Transamerica
Pyramid in San Francisco, UNLV’s SEB and UCI’s CalIT2 buildings.
