*"**Estimating Annualized Earthquake Losses for the United States"*
*Kishor Jaiswal*
*Research Structural Engineer*
*USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center*
The annualized earthquake loss (AEL) estimates for the United States, part
of the FEMA 366 revision, have been updated using the 2014 national seismic
hazard model, census-based population, and revised economic exposure
estimates of the general building stock. This comprehensive study
highlights that earthquakes continue to pose an eminent threat to humans
and the built environment in the United States and that devastating impacts
from high earthquake hazard and concentrated exposure are not limited to
California.
Unlike previous FEMA 366 studies, the present investigation accounted for
effects of site soil response and also provided AEL and AELR estimates for
Puerto Rico. The study estimated a national AEL of $6.1 billion (2014
dollars) which is a 10% increase over the 2008 FEMA 366 estimate. Elevated
AEL estimates are primarily due to changes in shaking hazard and increased
economic exposure from the newly added building inventory exposure. Fifty
metropolitan areas, led by the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas,
accounted for 80 percent of the total AEL estimate (Refer:
