I noticed this entry on an email received today with subject line "USGS
Information Technology Update, June 2011"
5. Update on Use of Google Maps Application Interface (API) on DOI Web Sites
USGS Enterprise Geographic Information System (EGIS) and Web and Social
Media staff are working with the DOI Solicitor's Office on a potential
ruling that could ban use of the Google Maps API on DOI web sites. Changes
in the Google Maps API terms of service (TOS) coming in October 2011 and the
inability of GSA and DOI to negotiate more Federal friendly TOS with Google
could result in a ruling that would replace the one made by the DOI Office
of the Chief Information Officer in June 2010, which only stated a
disclaimer was needed for use of the API. Alternative APIs are being
studied for recommendation. Details will be posted on
<http://gio.usgs.gov/egis/google> http://gio.usgs.gov/egis/google when
available.
