I should have commented on the general design earlier, so my comments below
apply to the general web layout, not the box around CA. Apologies for not
providing this feedback earlier.
Regarding the box and index page to CA, that looks good to me, except for an
earlier suggestion I offered. If you compare the sizes of the maps at, say,
http://ehpd-earthquake.cr.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Maps/special/Cali
fornia_Nevada.php
with
http://quake.usgs.gov/recenteqs/latestfault.htm
you'll note that the former gives up a lot of real estate to less important
information. Most people have monitors that are 12" high these days, so I
would take advantage of that size and up the size of *all* of the recenteqs
maps to be the same size as on the CA-NV pages.
I presume, also, that when the maps are migrated, that the link to the "USGS
California-Nevada webpages" on the lower right will disappear.

Subject: [EHPweb] Ideas for linking to California/Nevada from homepage
Hello,
We've received some feedback on how to improve access to California/
Nevada pages for users from California/Nevada. The idea of adding a
border around the region on the U.S. map is still the simplest
solution we've heard for the short term (besides doing nothing). One
issue with the initial example was the border being too fuzzy. I
cleaned up the border, so it is similar to other regions, and have an
example with image map in place on ehpdevel.
Please take a look at the development pages and send any feedback to
this list or directly to lisa at usgs.gov this week.
Proposed:
<http://ehpd-earthquake.cr.usgs.gov/>
http://ehpd-earthquake.cr.usgs.gov/
ok, but what happened to the left-hand side bar? I recommend the "regional
offices" content at the bottom be moved to the (restored) left-hand sidebar.
I bet a review of site visits will indicate that there is not much traffic
to these links.
I like the clickable expansion subwindows on the RHS. That's very efficient
use of space. You might also consider adding the 2 items below (Featured
Items, and Additional Resources) to the list
<http://ehpd-earthquake.cr.usgs.gov/earthquakes/>
http://ehpd-earthquake.cr.usgs.gov/earthquakes/
This page is highly redundant and cluttered. The icons on the right of the
map are identical to the list on the left-hand side bar. Moreover, the icons
are so big that they dribble off the bottom of my monitor. Similarly, the
"past/future/location" stuff on the right is presented in the left-hand side
bar. This page is very redundant with the
<http://ehpd-earthquake.cr.usgs.gov/> http://ehpd-earthquake.cr.usgs.gov/.
Why do we need both?
Existing: Same general comments apply
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/
Any feedback is appreciated,
Thanks,
Jeremy
