This appears to be correct. There were ext3fs file system errors on the
console, and the graphical console login would not work. But then it fell
out to a text-mode console login, and I was able to log in and force a
reboot. When it started to come up, it stopped when it was checking the
/ filesystem and said that a manual fsck was necessary. I did:
fsck -y /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
Then the system rebooted and came up normally.
