The new terrain images on the latest earthquakes page for the USA and
regional areas is distracting and makes it difficult to locate new
EQs...especially the smaller ones. This change was a serious step down
in site quality and is not customer friendly.

I think adding the earthquake fault line off the west coast of the USA
is distractive. I would prefer that they not be there. Your website is
perfect, I just do not like the visually annoying red lines in such a
small space.

Just wanted to say that I love the new additions to the US map. I'm in
Southern CA and we check out the website every once in a while, and
it's our first resource after a quake. Thanks for keeping the
information rolling!

Hi Carolyn,
I am going to assume that the map you refer to is on our USA
earthquakes page at this address:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/
I have enclosed a screen-shot (below) of that map for discussion. The
red lines on this map indicate major tectonic boundaries of the three
principal kinds: 1) subduction zones (e.g., Cascadian megathrust
offshore of the Pacific Northwest from northernmost California to
southern British Columbia, and a continuous belt of megathrusts
offshore southern Alaska westward of the Yukon Territory), 2)
transcurrent or strike-slip boundaries (e.g., San Andreas fault system
in California, Fairweather fault in southern Alaska, Queen Charlotte
fault in British Columbia) and finally 3) sea floor spreading centers
like the East Pacific Rise which appears in the Gulf of California and
offshore of the Cascadian subduction.
For more description of plate tectonic boundaries in general you
might try the following web site:
http://www.geology.wisc.edu/courses/g112/pl_tectonics.html

    Hope this answers the question,

      Jim

I find your knew color scheme very hard to see. The colors of the
earthquake squares blend in with the colors of the map. I usually
check your maps a few times a day, but may stop because of the color
blurr. I am not an older adult, and do not have vision problems. So if
I have difficulty, others will also.

Hi. The other day I noticed a change in the appearance of the
earthquake maps and was hoping you would go back to their previous
appearance. The added colors and red lines make it more difficult to
see the earthquake symbols- especially the red squares indicating a
new earthquake. The red lines and red squares tend to blend together.
The maps previously were very easy to "read" and decipher. I don't
know if for some reason I am clicking on something that is taking me
to the maps with the red fault lines & new colors, but if there is a
way to get back to the previously used maps, would you let me know?
Otherwise, I love your site and visit it regularly, as my daughter
lives in Seattle and i want to see what is happening out there.
Thanks, Merrilee Jones

Thanks for addressing this patron's question about how the USGS

Go back the the old site web format with the history and other

because some "boss" think it is too much and drop it off your site?

I have been using your website for a few years now, & I really
appreciate all the info on it, but I am not happy with the recent
changes you have made. On the U.S. maps, the new topographical colors
look nice & all, but they aren't very readable anymore. The squares
indicating the earthquakes are now to small to see easily, and the
coloring of the maps makes them even harder to see. I've always been
able to take a quick glance to see what new earthquakes have happened,
and now I can't hardly tell what's going on. I live on the Big Island
of Hawaii, and I like to know exactly where the quakes are every day.
Now the map is so small it's hard to even see the squares (which look
like dots now), much less be able to see the size difference between
the different quakes. Please do something to make the squares larger
and easy to see again, like they used to be. Thank you, Jah Neen

Nice bathyscapic/topo view...but what we would REALLY like to see
improvement in is simply the SIZE of the image. There is a whole page
with lots of wasted space, and a barely-larger than a postage stamp
for an image. It seems to me that should be less difficult than the
recent improvements. Also, why does PR, HI and AK have the new maps,
but Calif and Pac NW do not? Are they being rolled out slowly? Thanks,

While the new California Nevada map is bright and cheery, it fails to
do its intended job, show recent earthquakes. The bright colors of the
background compete with the colors of the earthquake squares which
along with the smaller size of the map make it very difficult to see
the earthquake squares. The muted background of the old map gave an
extra dimension, that is, it was almost layered. The map and fault
lines were available, but the important material, current earthquake
activity, was easy to follow. Dare I say that the new map is garish
and suitable as a decoration, not as a tool of information? Please
reconsider the new map. Thank you. Pam Hofmann

While the new color scheme for the USA Earthquake map may better
please the
artist, it does make the map is not harder to read and it takes far
longer
to down load. The orange background was quick, useful and could be
read at

Great job. Love the new look, map. I like to look in to your page
during my morning routine, was pleasantly surprised today. Keep up the
good work, my compliments. Only thing is, is 'last day' and 'last
week' colors are too much the same shade, the blue was better, easier
to discern. Respectfully submitted David Hutchison Tehachapi Ca

the world map. Keep up the good work.

Sometimes less is more. Regarding the coloration of the Earthquake
Center map, the epicenters, faults and magnitudes were easier
descerned without the color. It's a nice job but it doesn't work as
well as the former.

Wow. The color change was shocking at first. It is a little harder to
read now. I would suggest to use less intensive colors on the map. It
is hard to see detail.

Lisa-
Thanks for your response. I know the maps are exactly the same size -
it's an "appearance". There was not a problem seeing blue on the
prior maps, regardless of location. I am not color blind. Unsure
of what "world maps" you mention. Don't care. I have enjoyed USGS
web site until this change and now that is over. No reply needed to
this e-mail.

Hello-

Thanks for your feedback.

The maps are exactly the same size as before. The colors of the
symbol for last day changed from blue to orange, since you would not
be able to see a blue symbol on the blue ocean back ground. The
symbol colors are now the same as the symbol colors have always been
for the world maps. They were tested for different types of color-
blindness and other 508-accessibility issues.

This new map is hard to read. There appears to be no difference
between the color indicators of last day and last week. The fault line
is a nice addition. Map appears smaller and indistict. Thanks for

Will you be changing the color of the boundaries? Since they are red,
it's hard to make out the red earthquakes.

Yeah, the new topo does have more detail. But I think it’s too much
detail. The earthquake squares get lost in all the color. Or it just
my old eyes not working so great. Wasn’t there an option before to
change the background map?

line? - UPDATE

Lisa

1. I kind of agree with their initial concern. When one looks at the
home page there are no plate boundaries on the world map (yet they
exist I guess), but there is a plate boundary on the US map (seems
kinda US centric).

2. When you go to the US map there is an explanation of the heavy red
line below (that must be scrolled to see) and there is additional info
about the white lines that aren't on the map and when you zoom in
(roads -- no highway 101 but seemingly 280 in the bay area) are hard
to distinguish from the blue lines (which I assume are rivers, but go
crazy in the delta area)

Otherwise -- except for no rollover fault names it looks better than
the old orange.

Stan
