USGS Google Search Update

Read on for some helpful hints for users, for optimizing Web content
and for providing better search functionality for our USGS Web content.

Internal Search -> internal-search.usgs.gov

An internally hosted Google Search Appliance

Find & Contact Your Colleagues

a. The Internal Search Engine lets you search the Lotus Address
Book (LDAP) for people’s contact information. Their name, phone
number, and address is linked to a Google map of their location. The
trigger for this service is the keyword “Contact” followed by the
person’s first name, last name or both.

b. This service uses Google’s OneBox technology, which you can
also see in action on www.google.com if you type in “weather ‘zip
code’ ” or “movie ‘zip code’ ”.

Are you registered in the Web Inventory?

a. If you’re not seeing internal search results for your pages,
make sure those pages are registered! The internal search appliance
is only indexing pages that are in the Web Inventory - http://interactive3.er.usgs.gov/web_inventory/

Note: If the hostname (xx.usgs.gov) is registered then the content is
being indexed unless there is a robots.txt file in place.

Control how your pages are indexed – use robots.txt files

a. The USGS Search Appliance crawler name is usgs-gsa-crawler.
Use a robots.txt file to block directories that should not be indexed.
Directions are available from the documentation link below and
remember this will be helpful for public pages as well!)

Public Search -> search.usgs.gov

The Google Custom Search Engine, a customizable on-line search
application hosted by Google

Allow users to search an individual Web site or set of related sites

a. Follow the instructions on the documentation link below to
customize the search results for your pages.

Our Search documentation is at
         http://internal.usgs.gov/gio/eweb/wag/search_improvement/code.html
