20th Annual “Earthquakes: Mean Business”
Friday, February 1, 2013, at Saint Louis University
The 20th annual “Earthquakes: Mean Business” will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013, at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Mo. The program will be held in the Busch Student Center at SLU. It will start at 8:30 am and will conclude about 4:30 pm.
The purpose of the program is to increase awareness of earthquake hazards and earthquake risks in the central US. It will especially focus on the value of earthquake planning and mitigation, and how pro-active steps add value to both public and private investments and operations.
There will be exhibit booths that will provide additional information and handouts on the central US earthquake issue. Saint Louis University will also award CEUs or PDHs to participants.
“Earthquakes: Mean Business” is especially planned for those in the public and private sector who are interested in earthquake hazards, earthquake risks, risk mitigation, emergency planning, emergency management, and business continuity.
In the morning, the following plenary speakers will address geoscience, engineering, planning, and risk management aspects of earthquake hazards.
· Dr. Walter Mooney; US Geological Survey; Menlo Park, Calif.;
· Philip Caldwell; Schneider Electric; Seneca, S.C.;
· Dr. Deborah Pettit; Louisa School District; Louisa, Va.; and
· Dr. Anne Wein; US Geological Survey; Menlo Park, Calif.
Dr. Phillip Gould, Senior Professor, Washington University St. Louis, will present the luncheon presentation, “A Perspective on the Seismic Safety of Schools.”
There will be a selection of break-out sessions in the afternoon. Saint Louis University’s Earthquake Center will also be open for tours throughout the afternoon.
The Welcome Reception, a new complimentary networking and ice-breaker for all speakers, sponsors, exhibitors, and participants will be held on the preceding evening, Thursday, January 31, 2013.
