Re: Invitation to the New Madrid Earthquake Scenario Workshop, June 10, 2008

The New Madrid Chapter (NMC) of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) would like to invite your organization's involvement in the New Madrid Earthquake Scenario. An Executive Committee has been formed for the Scenario. The next participants' meeting for the Scenario is on Tuesday, June 10, 2008. Your involvement with other organizations will allow this scenario to develop desirable products for our region. If you have attended prior participants' workshops, you do not need to attend this one. You or another person from your organization may attend if you wish, regardless of prior attendance.

The NMC hopes that your office will send a representative on June 10, 2008, unless your office had been involved with a prior workshop. I hope that you may attend to learn about this Scenario. If you are unable to attend or will not be attending due to the great distance to the coming Workshop, we can provide other information through a website.

The Scenario Workshop will explain what an earthquake scenario is, ask who are additional participants that should be represented, and begin to evaluate the desirable products that the Midwest needs from an earthquake scenario. We are especially interested in the attendance of response/recovery, government, lifelines/utilities, and business/financial communities. An agenda will be sent via email to those who register for the meeting. The workshop may divide into groups and address issues for the response/recovery, government, lifelines/utilities, and business/financial communities. The June 10, 2008 Scenario Workshop will be held at the Oak Bend Branch, St. Louis County Library, 842 S. Holmes, St. Louis, MO 63122-6507, 314-822-0051. The library branch is northeast of the Big Bend Exit (278) of I-44 (well away from Hwy 40/I-64). Driving east from the exit one block on Big Bend, turn left at the traffic light onto S. Holmes and the library is one half block north on the right. The workshop will begin at 1 PM (doors will open at 12:45) and will conclude by 4:30 PM. [For those traveling the Hampton Inn & Suites at Forest Park (Corporate code 0002655556 for the best rate and note "Earthquake Insight"), 5650 Oakland Ave., St. Louis, Missouri 63110, 314-655-3993, is new and not too far from the Oak Bend Branch Library.

The NMC has resolved that the New Madrid Earthquake Scenario be undertaken following the EERI Scenario Guidelines (mitigation.eeri.org/files/Developing.a.Scenario.pdf). An example of a well-done scenario is the Seattle Fault Scenario (seattlescenario.eeri.org). These two documents are available at EERI's website, noted in parentheses following the document name above. Please review these two documents before attending. A screening of the '06 The Next Great Quake (San Francisco) may be given at the workshop. The Chapter would like to complete this Scenario with a draft in 2011 and the final report to the participating organizations by February 7, 2012, the Bicentennial of the largest event of the Great New Madrid Series. While the New Madrid Seismic Zone has the potential of producing the largest earthquakes, each seismic zone (around the New Madrid Seismic Zone) will be considered for its impact to the Midwest. Participating organizations in the New Madrid Earthquake Scenario will direct the products that the Scenario will report.

Please send a representative from your organization. Use the attached form to reply with the reservation from your organization. An email reply will be sent acknowledging receipt of your reservation within three business days. A form providing professional development hours for the person attending will be provided at the end of the day.

If you cannot attend this workshop, but have interest in the Scenario, please reply concerning your interest. A web-based information set is available.

You may make recommendations for the workshop or discuss the Scenario in general. Please contact Greg Hempen (314-743-4136 or 314-353-7638 or greg_hempen at urscorp.com) for any interest or concerns.

Sincerely yours,

Greg
