Hi
We're "organizing" an informal open workshop (see below) on
intraplate deformation & seismicity on the first day of
the March Earthscope meeting. We hope you'll consider coming.
Short presentations are welcome.
Please also pass this on to anyone else who might be interested.
There's a place to register when you register for the
meeting.
Hope to see you there,

Intraplate deformation & seismicity:
what we know, what we don't, and what we need to
This informal and open workshop focuses on formulating and
exploring the fundamental questions of
how faulting and deformation occur at present and over time
in the continental interior. We now know from GPS that
present deformation is extremely slow. Hence it is not
clear how this observation relates to prior earthquakes
in the New Madrid zone and elsewhere shown by paleoseismology,
and older deformation implied by structures and topography.
There is a growing sense that seismicity may migrate among fault
systems, that may be active for short periods and inactive
for much longer ones. Understanding these issues is a
natural Earthscope-related goal that will involve multidisciplinary
efforts, and have implications for both the long-term evolution
of the plate interior and for assessing seismic hazards there.
