We are also here to answer questions you might have.

Here is some news that may be new or old to some of you.

Everyone should be aware that any failed 20+ year old Guralp CMG-5 units are being replaced with either a Kinemetrics Obsidian with internal Episensor if available, or the ETNA 2’s. Some CMG-5 units were replaced with Basalt with internal episensors when they were available and supported. Now Kinemetrics supports the Obsidian and ETNA units. That means when the Depot receives a request for a replacement on any of these old units, you will be issued one of the above. The old Guralp’s will still be required to be returned to the Depot for disposition once they have been replaced in the field.

Also, near the end of 2016, it was discovered that Obsidians and Basalts could potentially have disk failures on data cards by the manufacturer Delkin. This issue was addressed with Kinemetrics and the Depot obtained new data cards from Transcend for the Obsidians from Kinemetrics, who assured us the previous brand was potentially to blame. So far the units that had their data cards replaced have not had any issues. It is possible that some units still out in the field could have the old Delkin brand cards still installed which have the potential to fail with disk errors or kernel panic errors. Failed Basalt cards are requested from manufacturer as they fail. Please notify the Depot, via an equipment request, if you have a unit with any of these errors so that you can either receive a replacement unit or card.

Are there any other issues the Depot should be aware of? Please share with us. All networks are encouraged to share any issues or equipment ideas that might come up.
