Just to follow up: yes, the problem was with the topography grd-file. It was made using xyz2grd from some ascii format file of unknown provenance. I remade the topography file using grdraster. No more grey lines.

Thanks both!

I checked and the .ps files have the same problem.

Bruce's reply made me look more at our specific setup and I'm now suspecting a problem with the topography grd-file...

-Renate

Renate, Bruce,

I've had a similar problem before, but the lines were not nearly
as bad. Do they show up in the Postscript files? My particular issue
was in the JPEG conversion, and cleared up when I played with
the compression rating and the Postscript background color
(for some reason changing the background from 255/255/255 to
254/254/254 solved it.) Not sure if you have the same problem
but it might help.
Hi Renate,

I've never seen anything like that before. Not only are the lines huge
and uncalled for, they don't even line up with the primary or secondary
frame or annotation intervals. The vertical ones don't seem to
correspond to anything at all.

I don't think the problem stems from your GRID_CROSS_* defaults. On my
system they are 0c, and I don't get anything like that.

Can you run mapping with -verbose and send the output to me.

I'll look at it, but in the meantime, you might consider posting the map
on the GMT help board and see if anyone there knows what might be
causing it. They're usually pretty responsive.
Hello Bruce,

Is there a mapping option that I can use to get rid of these ugly grid
lines on my pga and pgv plots?

I tried removing my .gmtdefaults4 file and rerunning, but no change.
Just updated to the latest version of everything and still there.

my map_axes : a60mf30m/a30mf30mWSen

After I run shakemap, a new .gmtdefaults4 file is created which has
these values:
GRID_CROSS_SIZE_PRIMARY = 0i
GRID_PEN_PRIMARY = 0.25p
GRID_CROSS_SIZE_SECONDARY = 0i
GRID_PEN_SECONDARY = 0.5p

I think I get these grids because the grid_cross_size is set to 0.
However, changing them in the .gmtdefaults4 file in SHAKE_HOME also
makes no difference.

GMT version 4.5.0

(btw, the grid is not plotted on intensity plots).

thanks, Renate
