<span style="font-family:"Calibri Light","Helvetica Light",sans-serif; font-size:12pt">Abstract: </span><span style="color:rgb(32,31,30); font-family:"Calibri Light","Helvetica Light",sans-serif; font-size:12pt">Wildfire can nucleate cascading hydrologic and
landslide hazards, primarily flooding and post-fire debris-flow activity, and the amount of area burned by wildfire in 2020 was substantial at the global scale. Starting in January 2020, wildfires burned millions of acres across Australia. In California, 5
of the 6 largest wildfires on record took place in 2020. In Colorado, there were 3 wildfires that were all larger than the largest wildfire perimeter on record previously. In Oregon, 11% of the Cascade Mountain Range was burned, primarily during a large eastward
wind-event over Labor Day weekend. Within the context of the 2020 wildfire year, this talk will focus on a specific case study of the Grizzly Creek Fire, which burned Glenwood Canyon, Colorado in 2020. In the summer of 2021, seven rainstorms produced extensive
debris flows in Glenwood Canyon within the Grizzly Creek burn scar. Scientists in the USGS post-fire debris-flow project were active in collecting data during the summer of 2021, including cataloging the rainfall and debris flow locations. These data are currently
being used to evaluate the debris flow assessment model. Moreover, we are using field observations, airborne imagery, and lidar to map debris-flow initiation, runout, and volume. This talk will highlight these current research activities and burgeoning work
aimed at elucidating fundamental processes that control debris flow initiation, transport, and deposition.</span></p>

He has a B.S. in Geology and a B.A. in French from West Virginia University; an M.S. in Geology from Colorado State University, where he focused on sediment transport in tropical rivers; and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder where he worked on
post-wildfire erosion. Francis also spent time working for the Colorado Water Conservation Board, and in private consulting for both Engineering and Hydrosystems, Inc. and Golder Associates. Currently, Francis works on post-wildfire debris flows in the Landslide
Hazard Program.</span></p>
