Thanks for the curiosity. The GSM 19, Overhauser Total Field Magnetometer
is different from the Fluxgate in that it is actually a frequency
measurement, while the Fluxgate outputs a near DC voltage. Because the
measurement is a frequency, it has to be heavily band-passed and amplified
in order for the frequency to be measured (counted).
Consequently, if the frequency is corrupted by an outside source
(artificial disturbance), the noise will 'swamp' the signal processor in
the electronics, rendering the measurement useless, and discarded by the
intelligence in the magnetometer. This leads to a missing value in our
acquisition system.
I hope this helps you and others understand how come there are missing
values. Because of the disturbances are short, and isolated (1609 through
1642 UT), I am still of the opinion there is some activity taking place in
close proximity to the observatory. But, close is a relative term, offset
by amplitude!
