This field trip is for business professionals, risk managers, emergency planners, engineers, government officials, students, faculty, geoscientists, and others who are interested in earthquake hazards and earthquake risks in the Central US.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>There is no cost for this field trip, other than personal travel costs, lodging, and meals. Field trip presenters are volunteers.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The route begins in Cahokia, Ill., at 4:00 pm on Friday, April 12. Cahokia, Ill., is just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Mo. Overnight stops will be in Chester, Ill., and Dyersburg, Tenn. Route will include parts of southwest Illinois, southeast Missouri, western Tennessee, and western Kentucky. The field trip will dismiss near Cairo, Ill., early afternoon on Sunday, April 14.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Stops will be made at sites that show geologic evidence of past earthquakes, historic sites related to past earthquake history of the region, geologic hazards of today, and geologic risks to our national transportation, economic, communication, financial, and risk management systems. The geologic history of the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquakes will be included. On Friday evening, an “Earthquakes 101” presentation will be given at the hotel in Chester, Ill., to help participants better understand sites and issues that will be visited on Saturday and Sunday.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Continuing Education Units (CEUs) may be available through the University of Missouri. A minimum of 12 participants are needed for this Earthquake Insight Field Trip to be held.
