Sustainability, in collaboration with Greensburg GreenTown and GreenTown Joplin,
will host the Second Annual Sustainable Disaster Recovery Conference on November
14<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: "><FONT face=Calibri>‐</FONT></SPAN>15, 2013 on the
campus of Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri.</FONT></P>

face=Calibri>‐</FONT></SPAN>day conference will include leaders in disaster
response and recovery, government, urban planning, emergency management, design,
renewable energy, public and private enterprise, green building, social work,
and sustainability. It features an impressive line<SPAN
style="FONT-FAMILY: "><FONT face=Calibri>‐</FONT></SPAN>up of speakers and
exhibitors eager to share experiences and resources to help cities and towns
prepare for disasters and, in the event that the “unthinkable” <SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>happens, rebuild sustainable communities
that are as efficient as they are resilient.</FONT></P>

Education, School of Social Work, Colorado State University, will discuss
personal and community resilience in the face of widespread casualties and
destruction. Steve Hewitt, former city administrator of Greensburg, Kans., will
discuss integrating sustainable disaster response and recovery contingencies
into pre<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: "><FONT face=Calibri>‐</FONT></SPAN>disaster
community plans.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Plenary panels and
breakout sessions will address<SPAN style="mso-fareast-font-family: symbolmt">
t</SPAN>he role of government in sustainable disaster response and recovery,
sustainable development principles and resiliency in community rebuilding, green
building and resilience, and grassroots disaster planning and sustainable
long<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: "><FONT
face=Calibri>‐</FONT></SPAN>term.</FONT></P>

Conference was a great success. Approximately 200 people—ranging from students
to government officials and industry professionals—attended a wide variety of
educational sessions focused on weaving the principles of sustainability and
energy<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: "><FONT face=Calibri>‐</FONT></SPAN>efficiency
into disaster recovery efforts. Building on the success of the inaugural year,
the 2013 conference will continue the exploration of sustainable disaster
recovery with added emphases on sustainable approaches to pre<SPAN
style="FONT-FAMILY: "><FONT face=Calibri>‐</FONT></SPAN>disaster planning,
emergency response, long-term recovery, and community resilience.</FONT></P>
