Dear All,

The K2 was introduced by Kinemetrics Inc. in 1990 and has been the cornerstone of many Strong Motion Networks and Programs worldwide. However, the K2 has been obsoleted for many years, and the K2 component availability is almost non-existent today. Up to now we tried to help our client base with components we had in stock that were purchased many years back but like anything in the electronic industry the majority of critical components are no longer available. Therefore Kinemetrics K2 repairs are no longer available.

In the meantime in the path to a seamless migration from legacy instrumentation to a new one without any interruption of existing network operations we introduced new products such as the Basalt for which many of you have already experienced. At the same time and on the other side of the spectrum of the "low-cost" accelerograph we introduced the new line "EqMet" (http://www.eqmet.com/) and the product commercially known as the TSA-SMA (http://www.eqmet.com/pdf/TSA-SMA.pdf).

Please note the TSA-SMA performance is superior than the K2s which had 19-bit resolution (i.e. ~114dB) and comes with modern communications capabilities to EW and SeisComP unlike the K2. For more technical information please check the links above or contact sales at eqmet.com<mailto:sales at eqmet.com>.

Pricing starts at $3,300.

We hope our offer is a compelling value proposition and path to an operational excellence.

Cheers

We would be willing to attempt service on K-2 varieties dependant on our abilty to find replacement parts. Our company services lots of legacy seismic equipment. Often the parts that fail are not the ones that are difficult to obtain.

FYI: We received the following communication from Kinemetrics last week; it also applies to the 6-ch Makalu which is housed in a K2 case:

"Please Note: Effective 4/22/2013, Kinemetrics, Inc. is no longer repairing K2 units worldwide. I've been instructed that you may contact the Sales Department at sales at kmi.com<mailto:sales at kmi.com><mailto:sales at kmi.com><mailto:sales at kmi.com> if you would like to purchase replacement units. The K2 was obsoleted for many years, the K2 component availability is almost non-existent today. Up to now we tried to help our client base with components we had in stock that were purchased many years ago but Intel, Motorola and other component manufacturers no longer manufacture those today, therefore we are completely out of solutions... Lastly the K2 was introduced in 1990 and Kinemetrics, Inc. is happy there are still many units in operation worldwide."

We have seven (7) K2 units and 22 Makalu's, some of which have not even been installed yet... this came as quite a shock to us, especially since it takes a long time to plan and budget new dataloggers for purchase.
