The IRIS Instrumentation Committee has learned of a new technology in  
ground motion sensing that may be of interest to the research community.

We are hosting a webinar to share information about the technology  
Monday April 11 at 1pm EDT.  The presentation will be given by  
representatives from QinetiQ.

IRIS does not endorse commercial products or vendors but seeks to  
broaden community awareness where a technology may advance  
seismological and geodetic research.
What follows is a description of the webinar provided by QinetiQ:
"OptaSense is a highly sensitive, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS)  
system that provides an automated means of monitoring or measuring  
vibration activity along long linear assets.  DAS operates through the  
principle of coherent optical time domain reflectometry to interpret  
the backscattered light within an optical fiber to sense the pressure  
and strain fields around the cable.  In our installations, every ten  
meters of standard telecommunications fiber becomes a new “virtual  
microphone” and an independent system can handle forty or more  
kilometers of cable.  Thus, one system can comprise more than 4000 of  
these virtual sensors, each with a useful bandwidth of over 1 kHz.  In  
our webinar, we will introduce the technology, its current application  
areas, and present earthquake and seismic data.  Further background
